Tannis Chartier, recreation therapy assistant

Social justice is about action for recreation therapy assistant Tannis Chartier. To Tannis this means taking steps to understand, educate and advocate for often overlooked people. Whether volunteering at the Lethbridge soup kitchen, developing educational programs or leading discussions about inclusion, she is committed to breaking down barriers and creating a more just and compassionate community.

Through her volunteer work, Tannis identified a significant gap in the care and treatment of marginalized individuals. Instead of simply acknowledging the issue, she took the initiative to develop a course on privilege, addiction and practical care methods to educate colleagues. She delivers this content through lunch-and-learn sessions and the general orientation presentations for new employees, equipping St. Michael's Health Centre staff to better serve marginalized populations with understanding and respect.

Her passion extends beyond education. She actively works to foster inclusion by organizing recreation programs for marginalized individuals in the broader community. These programs provide safe spaces where people can connect, heal and build confidence. Within St. Michael’s, her presentations encourage meaningful conversations about marginalized populations.

Tannis believes everyone deserves equal opportunities and access to care, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through her dedication to education, advocacy and hands-on support, she is helping to create a healthcare system where every person, particularly those in greatest need, is treated with dignity and fairness. Tannis is not just talking about change. She is making it happen.
