A strong, united team can overcome even the most challenging circumstances. When unexpected events disrupt hospital operations, it takes adaptability, teamwork and unwavering dedication to ensure patient care continues seamlessly.
The Nutrition, Food, Linen and Environmental Services team (NFLES) at St. Mary’s Hospital demonstrated these qualities throughout a year filled with disruptions. From water damage and equipment malfunctions to temporary program relocations, they worked together to minimize service interruptions and maintain a smooth operation for staff and patients.
The Environmental Services team played a crucial role in quickly preparing spaces for reopening, responding to daily challenges with resilience and efficiency. Despite the unpredictability of room closures and relocations, they ensured that return-to-service cleaning was completed on time, often ahead of schedule, so that hospital operations could continue without delay.
At the same time, the Food Services team adapted to space limitations, using half of the cafeteria for equipment storage and later as a Connect Care training space for 11 months. Despite these changes, they ensured that patient meals and cafeteria services continued with minimal disruption. Their positive energy turned challenges into opportunities, even taking menu suggestions from contractors who had become part of the St. Mary’s family.
Beyond their core duties, these teams uplift one another. Whether helping transport meal carts, decorating hospital spaces or organizing the Acts of Random Kindness award, they foster a culture of support and connection.
The NFLES team has strengthened both patient care and workplace morale, proving that teamwork truly makes a difference.
