Volunteer knitters and home crafters group

The Volunteer knitters and home crafters group at Misericordia Community Hospital work together, but for them it is more about kindness, connection and healing into every stitch. With just one request from the hospital, these dedicated volunteers rally their network of skilled crafters to create meaningful, hand-crafted items that bring comfort to patients during vulnerable moments.

This group’s ability to coordinate across multiple organizations is remarkable. TELUS Ambassadors lovingly craft heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients, while the Spruce Grove crafters group provides comfort chickens, baby layettes and receiving blankets. Volunteers from Hosanna Lutheran Church dedicate their time to sewing palliative TLC blankets, and groups like Craft YEG quickly step in when last-minute needs arise—such as crocheting mini-Easter baskets to ensure every patient received a special treat. Their collective efforts not only fulfill physical needs but also provide warmth and emotional support.

Beyond their handmade contributions, these volunteers strengthen community ties. A single afghan gifted to a patient recovering from heart failure and an amputation brought back cherished memories of her mother and grandmother, completely transforming her outlook. Her words, “This means the world to me”, are a testament to the group’s impact, showing that their work extends beyond blankets and pillows to restoring dignity, comfort and hope.

Through their dedication and teamwork, the volunteer knitters and home crafters group unites people inside and outside the Misericordia hospital to create lasting connections and uplift the human spirit.
