Roberta M. Van Wyk, volunteer

Some people have an extraordinary ability to bring comfort, connection and warmth to those around them. Volunteer, Roberta M. Van Wyk is one of those people. Even in the face of personal loss, she remained steadfast in her dedication to the residents, families and staff of Centre de Santé Saint-Thomas, turning her grief into a powerful force for kindness and service.

After her mother, Rose Munro, passed away in May 2023, Roberta chose to continue her volunteer work at the site, running the Tuck Shop and the crib club every Wednesday. Through patience, humor and a listening ear, she became a confidant to many, offering more than just companionship. She created a space where residents felt valued and heard. In honor of her mother’s love for cribbage, she and her family made a donation to expand the crib club, bringing together both supportive and independent living residents for friendly competition and social connection.

She shares her time beyond scheduled activities. She takes the time to personally welcome new residents, learn their life stories and ensure they feel a sense of belonging. She recognizes vulnerability and treats everyone with dignity, never seeing a diagnosis only the person behind it.

Through her selflessness and ability to foster deep relationships, Roberta has become a cherished part of the Centre de Santé Saint-Thomas. Her actions embody true compassion, proving that even in sorrow, there is an opportunity to bring joy, comfort and human connection to others.
