In Unit 2B at Villa Caritas, respect is more than just a value. It’s the foundation of every interaction with patients, families and colleagues. This dedicated team provides respectful care for individuals with complex dementia. They create individualized care plans for each patient and their needs. They listen to both patients and families recognizing each patient is unique.
Understanding that dementia can be difficult for families to accept, the team takes a proactive approach to communication. They listen with empathy, provide education about the disease’s process and work collaboratively to find solutions that ease family concerns. When a family struggled with missing clothing due to their loved one discarding items, the unit manager met with them to explain the patient’s behaviours. Together, they agreed to a simple, dignity-preserving solution allowing the patient to wear comfortable hospital-provided clothing, preventing further distress for both the family and their loved one.
The team also embraces cultural sensitivity, recognizing that every family’s values and needs are unique. When a patient’s wife wished to be more involved in his care, staff held a family meeting, listened to her concerns and developed a safe, structured plan to allow her to participate while maintaining boundaries.
Respect extends beyond patient care; it defines how Unit 2B staff support and uplift one another. Their person-centered approach creates a positive environment where all feel included and valued. Through their dedication, they continue to foster a culture of understanding, dignity and respect, making a lasting impact on residents and families.
